About Bluestem High School

The History of Bluestem High School, USD 205

The present Bluestem High School was erected in 1973. During that time, Kenneth T. Pharr was the superintendent. Simpson and Son, Inc. of Wichita, were the General Contractors and Prigmore and Allen of El Dorado, were the Architects. When the school was first built, the shop/art rooms were not connected to the main building.

As the school's population grew, so did the building. In 1991, the addition of the "B" wing hall added six classrooms and attached the shop/art building to the main building. At that time, L. Gerald Schuetz was the superintendent. Walz, Harman and Huffman, were the contractors and once again, Prigmore and Allen were the architects.

Directions To Bluestem High School

Leon is located about 35-40 miles east of Wichita on Highway 400. Bluestem High School is just north of Highway 400. You can start looking for it after you pass Kistlers which is the gas/convenience station at the top of a hill. There is a small Bluestem High School highway sign just after the 50 mph speed warning sign. Watch out for the cops, they do patrol it. The high school is the first large building just north of the softball and baseball diamonds.

If you're coming from Augusta, start off by going East on Highway 400. Take the Fredonia exit, DO NOT take the El Dorado exit or you'll end up going in circles. After you cross the bridge it's about three miles to Leon. You'll approach the city limits where the speed limit is reduced to 50 mph. The school is located just north of Highway 400, which is across the street from Leon Cemetery. You'll turn left on Bluestem Road which is west of the high school, or Mill Road which is east of the high school.

The first school you will see is Bluestem High School, then behind the High School, to the north, is Bluestem's District office, and the large building north of the the District office is Bluestem Elementary.
