...Board Meeting Notes
The Board heard a presentation by BHS Debate and Forensics coach Daniel Dawson during the public forum. The BHS 4-speaker debate team performed very well at the regional in Fort Scott, qualifying for State and the team also placed second at the CPL league meet. Stacey Scribner reported that the fundraiser for the Madden family had raised over $4,800.
The Board approved the consent agenda that included approval of the December 14, 2009 meeting minutes, the financial reports and claims and acceptance of the BMS December site council notes.
The Board quickly reviewed written staff reports. Mr. Rivers noted that the governor was giving the State of the State address and we should look for the highlights tomorrow.
The Board discussed calendars for the remainder of 2009-2010 and for 2010-2011. The Board approved a shortened calendar for the current school year. A final decision on the exact end dates and details of the calendar will be delivered in February. The Board also approved the establishment of a shortened calendar for the 2010-2011 school year. A decision on whether to establish a 4-day week or to simply start later and end sooner will be made at a future meeting.
The Board discussed strategy to absorb budget cuts and declining enrollment funding issues. The decision to shorten the school year will play into the budget cuts. Also planned are reducing administrative staff (1.4 FTE), not replacing one elementary teaching vacancy created through retirement, and not replacing one middle school teaching vacancy created through retirement. Further cuts are still in the research stages.
The Board met with three applicants for the vacant position on the Board. Cindy Lewis, Toni Harryman and Damian Korte made brief presentations and answered questions from the Board. The Board selected Damian Korte to fill the vacant seat. The position will be placed on the election ballot in April 2011. The person elected at that time will fill the seat for another two years until the position’s normal election cycle.
The Board entered a series of executive sessions to discuss non-elected personnel and to discuss professional negotiations.
The Board employed Renee Knutson as a BHS custodian.
The Board employed Todd Leed as BHS asst. baseball coach.
The Board employed Kyle Madden as BHS asst. golf coach.
The Board approved the restructuring of the administration for 2010-2011 to create a 7-12 Building Principal position. Joel Lovesee was appointed to that position.
The Board approved the restructuring of the administration for 2010-2011 to create a 7-12 Vice Principal / Activities Director position.
The Board extended the contracts of Debbie Webster and Joel Lovesee through the 2011-2012 school year.
