Course Descriptions

Band
Band
is composed of two distinct components of marching band and concert
band. Those students involved in varsity football will be excused
without grade consequence from performing at home football games.
All other students will present pregame and half time shows at each
home game. The concert band will prepare and perform concert band
literature for various concert, clinics, and contests. Membership
of pep band for basketball will be based on volunteers from the
group. The final activity will be providing music for
graduation.
Music
Theory
Open
to all students wanting to learn the mechanics of writing and
analyzing music. Content includes basic elements of music, scales,
chords and chord progressions, non-harmonic tones, inversions,
original composition, ear training, and music history.
Advanced
Music Theory
Open to all students who have completed the first year. This year
is a continuation of first year theory with the addition of
advanced analysis. The emphasis is on individual composition in
either choral or orchestral music.
Choir
Choir is open to all students at BHS who are academically eligible
with consent of instructor. The group performs regularly throughout
the year and participates in the league and state festivals. Grades
are based on participation, demonstrated ability to practice good
vocal technique, and special projects.
Jazz
Band
Membership by arrangement
with the director. Music played will be popular, swing, and jazz.
Emphasis on individual solo playing and developing ability to play
in various styles of music. All members will be expected to provide
nucleus for Basketball Pep Band.
Chamber
Singers
Chamber
singers is a womens choir. The group performs regularly throughout
the year and
participates in the league
and state festivals. Grades are based on participation,
demonstrated ability to practice good vocal technique, and special
projects.
Madrigals
This
is a performance-oriented class which is open only on an audition
basis. The group performs frequently during the year and spends
much of the first semester preparing for the Renaissance Feast in
December. In the spring there are numerous festivals and area
programs. All members are expected to demonstrate a high level of
musicianship and commitment. Grades are based on participation and
improvement of individual musical skills.
