English 09
Students focus on critical thinking through literature and composition. Literary analysis and reading skills will focus on the identification and application of literary terms through the study of world literature. These skills will be further enhanced through the Accelerated Reader program. The completion of an MLA formatted persuasive research paper will also be required.

Core English 09
This course varies from regular English 09 in the levels of curricular modifications according to class size, assignment length, and due dates. Students will have more focused, individualized instruction.

English 10
This course focuses on literature, reading and writing skills in preparation for the Kansas State Reading Assessment. Literature study includes drama, poetry, the short story, and the novel. Through the study of literature, students will develop skills in comprehension, analysis, interpretation, criticism, and creative use of language. Students will enhance their reading skills with Accelerated Reader. Students will compete a research paper, which will incorporate the research process and MLA documentation.
Prerequisite: passing credit in English 09.

Core English 10
This course varies from regular English 10 in levels of curricular modifications according to class size, assignment length, and due dates. Students will have a more focused, individualized instruction for the Kansas Reading Assessment preparation.

English 11
Students focus on critical thinking through literature and composition. Literary analysis and reading skills will be reviewed and practiced through the study of American literature, presented in a thematic format. These skills will be further enhanced through comprehensive book reports. Juniors also take the Kansas State Writing Assessment, which is a persuasive essay. Research projects and a career I-Search paper following MLA format will also be required.
Prerequisite: Passing English 09 and English 10

Core English 11
The primary focus of Core English 11 is preparation to retake the Kansas State Reading Assessment. Students will evaluate their test scores and identify standards for remediation. This course varies fro regular English 11 in the levels of curricular modifications according to class size, assignment length, and due dates.

Honors English 11
Enrollment in Honors English will be based upon Kansas State Reading Assessment scores and exemplary performance in English 9 and 10. All other English 11 guidelines apply within an accelerated and enriched presentation.

English 12
This course is a senior level English course, focusing on literature, as well as essay and technical writing. Students will complete a research paper, which will incorporate the research process and MLA documentation. Students will utilize editing skills mastered in previous English courses.
Prerequisite: Passing English 9, English 10, and English 11.

College Preparatory English
This is an advanced course for the college bound senior that fulfills the senior English graduation requirement. Students will learn how to revise their own writing and what a composition teacher looks for in a written paper. College texts will be used, and different types and styles of writing will be analyzed, practiced, and assessed according to the six trait analytical model. Two research papers will be written, using both MLA (Modern Language Association) and APA (American Psychological Association) style documentation. Major literature projects for the year will be a study of Hamlet; Nineteenth Century Novels, and an author research anthology.
Prerequisite: Passing grade in English 09, 10, & 11
