Haverhill First Grade

Overview

First Graders review concepts taught in Kindergarten.  Through the year the concepts are learned and expanded upon.

Phonics is a big part of reading.  We learn sounds and rules to produce words.  The words are developed into sentences. Then sentences into paragraphs and eventually into stories. Stories are developed first by ideas, then grammar of sentences with punctuation and capitalization, and spelling phonically and correctly.

As we get into reading words, phases, sentences and stories, we develop our reading skills and vocabulary through stories in new and old reading series and the AR reading program.

Math in first grade starts with a math board which is taught each morning.  Everyday the first graders view and change the calendar. This involves learning days of the week, months, year, numbers, patterns, and seasons.   The weather is charted in a graph  and read by use of a thermometer. As the year continues, the board adds new math concepts such as a 100 chart, clock, tens and ones, and money.  These concepts are reviewed every day and then are expanded and developed further in the regular math sessions.  Other concepts developed in math besides relationship of numbers one to one-hundred are addition, subtraction, problem solving , measurement, fractions and shapes in geometry.

Social Studies, Science, Health are studied each day as a separate unit or are incorporated into the curriculum.
