BASE Scholarship Information
BASE is honored to administer the following scholarships, and we are grateful to the families of those memorializing their loved ones, as well as to all of our donors for making this investment in the future of Bluestem students. Please note that these scholarships are issued on a one-time basis and are not renewable. Please contact Mr. Womacks, Bluestem High School counselor, for the appropriate scholarship applications. Scholarship recipients will be announced at the Senior Award Assembly in May.
Donna Cornish Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is in memory of Donna Cornish, a long-time member of our community. She was employed by our school district, and her two daughters graduated from Bluestem High School. This $300.00 scholarship is awarded based on ability to do college-level work, participation in extra-curricular activities, and a statement of goals written by the student.
David Kohls Memorial Scholarship
David Kohls was a long-time resident of the USD 205 school district and a much-loved and respected employee of the district for many years. David served the district in many roles, including teacher, principal, activities director and coach. The family has chosen to honor David’s memory by creating a scholarship which will be awarded for the first time in the spring of 2009.
The recipient of this $500 scholarship must be a Bluestem senior who is continuing his or her education on the college level, and who has participated in athletics during his or her high school career. In addition to the scholarship, the memorial fund will also provide an annual gift to benefit the libraries of USD 205.
Sam Parsons Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is in memory of Sam Parsons, who served on the USD 205 Board of Education for many years. Sam and his children were graduates of Bluestem High School. This $500 scholarship is awarded to a student entering the field of education, who shows evidence of the ability to do college-level work, participation in extra-curricular activities, and a statement of goals written by the student.
BASE Community Service Scholarship
This $1000 scholarship is based on community service – currently a total of 100 hours of verified community service is required – and a short essay written by the student. In addition, the recipient must be able to do college-level work, as evidenced by his or her transcript and GPA. Your student should begin now to keep track of their community service hours.
2008 Scholarship Recipients
Donna Cornish Memorial Scholarship: Miranda Smith
BASE Community Service Scholarship: Bailie Redenbaugh
Sam Parsons Memorial Scholarship: No student applications were qualified, so according to the provisions of the memorial, the scholarship was awarded to a USD 205 staff member continuing their education. This year's recipient is Heather Gillis.
