BLUESTEM ASSOCIATION FOR STUDENTS' EDUCATION

January 28, 2008

BLUESTEM STUDENTS RECEIVE OVER $30,000

Since the Bluestem Association for Students’ Education (BASE) was formed in 1998, over $30,000 has been distributed to benefit Bluestem students through academic scholarships and classroom grants.

BASE, a 501©3 non-profit organization, was created as a means to enhance the educational opportunities for Bluestem students beyond the state funding to our district. Over $16,000 in classroom grants have been awarded to help teachers provide innovative instructional methods and classroom materials. Download the teacher grant application in pdf form or the Microsoft Word form. Scholarships totaling more than $12,000 have been presented to qualifying Bluestem students planning to attend college after high school graduation.

Financial support for the BASE Foundation’s classroom grants and student scholarships has come from numerous individuals and businesses. Many Bluestem district employees directly support BASE through payroll deduction. Additionally, BASE has secured grant money from the federal government and area businesses to match BASE fundraising and scholarship awards. Finally, BASE memorials have allowed families to name a local charity to honor the memory of their loved ones.

Bluestem patrons can be proud of raising over $30,000 for our community’s students. Members of the community that are interested in serving on the BASE board of directors are encouraged to contact the USD 205 Central Office for a list of current board members in order to find out more about this opportunity. Also, please consider how you might direct a portion of your annual tax deductible giving to this local effort to make a difference for Bluestem students by contacting BASE, 711 N. West, Leon, KS 67074.
